10-2-2025 (BANGKOK) A wealthy Sri Lankan businessman has been ordered to relocate his pet lions within seven days following concerns from local residents about late-night roaring, Thai wildlife authorities confirmed yesterday.
The directive came after wildlife officials conducted a thorough inspection of the luxury property owned by Divarun Vaikunda Nadar, 54, in Pattaya’s upmarket Soi Phra Tamnak 5 neighbourhood.
Leading the multi-agency inspection team, Sadudee Punpugdee, director of the Wild Fauna and Flora Protection Division, verified that the lions were legally registered and properly microchipped. However, due to mounting concerns from nearby residents, authorities determined the animals must be moved to a more suitable location.
“While Mr Nadar has complied with all legal requirements for exotic pet ownership, the proximity to residential areas has become problematic,” Punpugdee told reporters. “The owner has cooperated fully and agreed to relocate the animals within the specified timeframe.”
Officials will inspect the proposed new facility to ensure it meets strict safety standards and maintains adequate distance from residential areas. Should the new location fail to meet requirements, the lions will be temporarily housed at the Protected Area Regional Office 2 in Sri Racha, where Nadar will retain visitation rights.
The case has prompted the Wildlife Conservation Bureau to review its regulations on big cat ownership. “We’ve suspended all lion import permits for breeding purposes to prevent further commercial trade,” a bureau spokesperson said. “Prospective exotic pet owners must now demonstrate adequate space, ensure public safety, and secure neighbourhood consensus before obtaining permits.”
