7-2-2025 (MANILA) Vice President Sara Duterte has firmly rejected speculation about her potential resignation, whilst maintaining a notably composed demeanour about the proceedings.
Speaking at a press briefing in Manila on Friday, the Vice President appeared unmoved by the developments, stating the matter was “far from reaching that point” regarding any resignation considerations. She revealed her legal team has been strategically preparing since November 2023, when initial impeachment plans were first announced by ACT Teachers Partylist Representative France Castro.
In a remarkably candid moment, Duterte downplayed the gravity of the situation, suggesting that “being left by a boyfriend or girlfriend hurts more than being impeached by the House of Representatives.”
The Vice President confirmed she would likely not appear at the impeachment court proceedings, should they commence, noting that her presence might prove “intimidating” to those involved. A meeting with her legal counsel was scheduled for later in the day to discuss strategy.
Addressing one of the most serious allegations in the Articles of Impeachment—the alleged conspiracy to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, First Lady Liza Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez—Duterte categorically denied making assassination threats. “They are the only ones saying that. They are the ones talking about assassination, assassins, and gunmen. I did not say that,” she insisted.
The impeachment, backed by 215 members of Congress, marks a significant political development in the Philippines. However, the trial cannot begin until the Senate resumes its session in June, according to Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero.
In a touching aside, Duterte revealed that whilst her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, had expressed interest in joining her defence team, she would likely discourage his involvement, citing his advanced age of 80 and the rigorous nature of impeachment proceedings.
The Vice President declined to comment on President Marcos Jr’s recent statement distancing himself from the impeachment proceedings, instead concluding her prepared remarks with a solemn “God save the Philippines.”
