22-1-2025 (JENIN) Fresh violence erupted in the West Bank city of Jenin on Wednesday as Israeli defence forces mounted an extensive military operation, marking a significant escalation in the region’s ongoing conflict.
Local authorities reported intense fighting throughout the city, with Israeli forces employing bulldozers to block access routes to both the Jenin refugee camp and the city’s main hospital. Jenin Governor Kamal Abu al-Rub described the situation as “severely critical” amidst reports of heavy gunfire and explosions.
The operation, dubbed “Iron Wall” by Israeli military authorities, commenced on Tuesday, resulting in ten Palestinian casualties and approximately 20 detentions from neighbouring villages, according to Palestinian officials. The Israeli military characterised the initiative as a counter-terrorism effort, claiming successful engagement with “over 10 terrorist operatives” and the neutralisation of numerous explosive devices.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz emphasised the operation’s strategic importance, describing it as “decisive” in addressing what he termed terrorist activities within the camp. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu framed the offensive within a broader regional strategy targeting Iranian influence, suggesting links between Tehran and militant groups across the Middle East, including the West Bank.

The timing of the operation is particularly significant, coming shortly after the implementation of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed profound concern over the developments, urging Israeli forces to exercise “maximum restraint”.
The West Bank has witnessed unprecedented levels of violence since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. Palestinian health authorities report 848 Palestinians have lost their lives in the territory during this period, while Israeli officials confirm 29 Israeli casualties resulting from Palestinian attacks or military operations.
Jenin, particularly its refugee camp, has long been recognised as a centre of Palestinian militant activity, frequently drawing Israeli military attention. The current operation represents one of the most substantial military campaigns in the area since the Gaza conflict began, highlighting the persistent tensions in the occupied territories.
