20-1-2025 (BANGKOK) A Polish national could face up to a decade behind bars following a shocking incident of sexual harassment at a Bangkok convenience store that has sparked outrage across Thailand’s capital.
The incident, which occurred on 21 December, saw 31-year-old Polish tourist Piotr allegedly sexually assault a Thai woman by slapping her buttocks whilst she was shopping. CCTV footage captured the entire incident, which left the victim feeling deeply humiliated.
Initially mistaking the assault for a playful gesture from a friend, the victim’s shock turned to distress upon discovering her assailant was a complete stranger. Following counsel from an acquaintance who informed her of the illegal nature of the act, she approached local authorities seeking merely an apology from the perpetrator.
However, the situation escalated when Piotr displayed a dismissive attitude towards the allegations. Speaking through his condominium agent, he reportedly showed no remorse, stating: “I didn’t hit her hard and I’ve done this many times at entertainment venues. No one said anything and I don’t think I did anything wrong.”
The tourist’s cavalier response, coupled with his threat to flee the country, prompted the victim to pursue formal legal action. Thai authorities subsequently obtained an arrest warrant, leading to Piotr’s apprehension at his rented accommodation.
Metropolitan Police Bureau’s Crime Suppression Division Chief, Police Major General Theeradej Thamsuthee, emphasised that Thailand’s legal system applies equally to all offenders, regardless of nationality. “If the crime is committed in Thailand, they will be punished according to Thai law,” he stated firmly.
The police chief also made a public appeal for any other potential victims to come forward, promising a thorough investigation into the matter. “Even seemingly minor cases that disturb public peace will be treated with utmost seriousness,” he added.
During questioning, Piotr admitted to the assault but claimed ignorance of its illegality, explaining his absence at the initial police summons by saying he thought it was an insignificant matter.
The tourist now faces charges of committing indecent acts against a person over 15 years of age. If convicted, he could receive a maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to 200,000 Thai baht.
