14-1-2025 (KUALA LUMPUR) Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has taken to social media with a satirical response to long-standing allegations of corruption, in a video that has captured widespread attention across the nation.
The nonagenarian statesman, who will mark his centenary next year, posted a clever piece of political theatre on the social media platform X, showing himself conducting a mock search for RM3 billion that critics claim he accumulated during his tenure as Malaysia’s longest-serving premier.
In the quirky 86-second clip, the former premier can be seen wandering through his residence, peering behind his television set and lifting sofa cushions in an exaggerated hunt for the purported fortune. The performance continues into his bedroom, where he makes a show of checking under the bed for the missing billions.
“I’ve spent two years searching for this RM3 billion that I’m supposed to have, but it’s nowhere to be found,” Dr Mahathir remarks in the footage, displaying his characteristic dry wit.
The video reaches its comedic climax when someone off-camera suggests the money might be secreted away in Switzerland, to which Dr Mahathir responds with evident sarcasm, “Perhaps we should look there. Swiss banks might be holding it.”
