9-1-2025 (JAKARTA) Indonesia has announced its commitment to ratify crucial amendments to the ASEAN-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement.
During high-level talks in Jakarta, Deputy Trade Minister Dyah Roro Esti Widya Putri emphasised the strategic importance of Hong Kong as a trading partner whilst meeting with Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary Paul Chan. The proposed amendments aim to modernise the existing framework and unlock new opportunities in trade and investment between the two regions.
“Our relationship with Hong Kong represents a cornerstone of our international trade strategy,” Deputy Minister Putri said. “The ratification process is currently underway, and we are keen to maximise the full potential of this enhanced partnership.”
The agreement’s modification includes provisions for technical cooperation, with Hong Kong offering substantial support for Indonesia’s digital transformation initiatives. This assistance comes at a crucial time as Indonesia seeks to modernise its economic infrastructure and embrace technological innovation.
In a notable development, Indonesia has also signalled its readiness to expand into the growing clean energy market in Hong Kong. The Southeast Asian nation is positioning itself to become a key supplier of batteries and renewable energy solutions, responding to Hong Kong’s increasing demand for sustainable technologies and electric vehicle infrastructure.
