7-1-2025 (KUALA LUMPUR) A wave of coordinated attacks struck four branches of the popular Asa No Hikari Japanese Bread and Cake Bakery in the early hours of Wednesday morning, leaving a trail of destruction and terrified staff members.
The first attack occurred at approximately 5 am at the chain’s flagship branch in Kampung Baru, Bukit Mertajam, where six masked assailants dressed in black, wielding sharp weapons, vandalised the premises. The perpetrators systematically destroyed the establishment’s glass frontage, display cabinets, and refrigeration units, leaving shattered glass and damaged baked goods strewn across the floor.
Staff members present during the incident described moments of sheer terror as the attack unfolded. A baker, who had arrived for his regular 4 am shift, fled through the rear exit upon hearing the commotion, whilst six other employees working upstairs remained hidden after hearing the sound of breaking glass.
“The attackers were completely covered in black attire, making identification impossible,” said one staff member, who wished to remain anonymous. “The poor lighting conditions in the corridor and the early morning darkness further obscured their appearance. They were in and out within two minutes, but the damage they caused was extensive.”
The establishment, which has been serving the local community for six years, was not the only target. Similar attacks were reported at the bakery’s branches in Kulim, Batu Kawan, and Tambun, suggesting a coordinated operation against the successful chain.
The Bukit Mertajam outlet, which typically operates from 6 am to 10 pm daily, has CCTV installed both inside and outside the premises, which may provide crucial evidence for the ongoing police investigation.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incidents, with forensic teams examining the crime scenes. The owner of Asa No Hikari has filed official police reports for all affected locations.
The attacks have sent shockwaves through the local business community, raising concerns about security measures for early-morning operations. Police have urged anyone with information about the incidents to come forward.
