5-1-2025 (BANGKOK) 151 Thai nationals have returned home following their release from Myanmar custody, where they were held for involvement in illegal online gambling operations and call centre scams. The release coincided with Myanmar’s Independence Day celebrations on 4 January.
The group, comprising 74 men and 77 women, crossed the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge 2 in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province, marking the end of their approximately one-year detention. However, questions remain about the whereabouts of four Thai crew members from the original group of detainees.
Police Inspector-General Thatchai Pitaneelabutr, who heads the Technology Crime Suppression Centre, was present at the border checkpoint to oversee the repatriation process. He explained that the individuals were arrested in early 2024 during a sweeping crackdown by Myanmar authorities in Tachileik District.
“These releases are the result of ongoing diplomatic negotiations between our two nations,” Inspector-General Thatchai said. “Several juveniles were previously released, whilst the remaining adults served sentences for illegal entry and involvement in gambling operations.”
Deputy Governor of Chiang Rai Province, Ratchan Minoi, coordinated a multi-agency response to process the returning nationals. Health officials conducted medical screenings and mental health assessments, whilst immigration officers and social services representatives interviewed the returnees to identify potential victims of human trafficking.
“Each individual will undergo thorough screening to determine their level of involvement in criminal activities,” a senior immigration official stated. “Those cleared of serious offences will be reunited with their families, whilst others may face further investigation.”
