4-1-2025 (BALI) Authorities launch an investigation into the assault and robbery of a Chinese tourist in the early hours of 1 January 2025.
The victim, identified only as JT, was attacked following New Year’s Eve festivities at Nyang Nyang Beach in South Kuta’s Pecatu area, Badung regency. The incident occurred after she became separated from her travelling companions whilst seeking transport back to her accommodation.
According to witness statements, JT had been celebrating with six friends when the group dispersed to find motorcycle taxis. Whilst four members of the party successfully secured transport, JT and two others remained behind. Upon spotting a motorcycle taxi driver who had just completed a journey, JT approached him requesting transport to her villa on Labuansait Road.
Rather than delivering her to her destination, the driver allegedly diverted to the isolated Batu Kandik Road where the assault took place. The victim attempted to contact friends but was thwarted by poor mobile reception in the area. Despite her resistance, the assailant proceeded to attack her before stealing a diamond bracelet from her person.
AKBP Ketut Ekajaya, Head of Bali Police Public Relations, confirmed that a formal complaint was lodged on 2 January. “The case has been transferred to our Criminal Investigation Directorate and enquiries are ongoing,” he stated on Friday.
The incident has prompted concern from tourism officials. Tjokorda Bagus Pemayun, Head of the Bali Tourism Office, expressed dismay at the potential impact on the island’s reputation as a premier holiday destination. “This occurs at a time when visitor numbers are trending upward and Bali has received international recognition,” he noted, pledging to coordinate with relevant agencies to address the matter.
