3-1-2024 (BANGKOK) Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared assets exceeding US$400 million, including an extensive collection of luxury accessories that has captured public attention.
The declaration, confirmed by her Pheu Thai Party, reveals the premier’s substantial portfolio encompasses designer handbags and timepieces worth millions of dollars. The official filing to the National Anti-Corruption Commission details more than 200 premium handbags valued at approximately US$2 million, alongside an impressive collection of 114 luxury timepieces worth nearly US$5 million.
Beyond her luxury collections, the Prime Minister’s declaration shows significant financial holdings, with investments totalling 11 billion baht and liquid assets of approximately one billion baht. Her property portfolio extends internationally, featuring real estate in both London and Japan.
The PM, who assumed office in September 2023, becomes the fourth member of the influential Shinawatra family to lead Thailand’s government within two decades. She is the daughter of telecommunications tycoon and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who Forbes ranks as Thailand’s tenth wealthiest individual with an estimated net worth of US$2.1 billion.
After accounting for liabilities of nearly five billion baht, Mrs Shinawatra’s net worth stands at approximately US$258 million, according to the official documentation.
The Shinawatra family’s political influence stems from the telecommunications empire built by Thaksin, who previously owned Manchester City Football Club. Despite his exile following a military coup, the family has maintained its significant presence in Thai politics.
