30-12-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) An elderly woman who fell victim to a violent snatch theft last autumn has died from complications related to her injuries, local community leaders confirmed today.
Mrs Lim Foong Mei, 78, passed away at a Bangsar nursing facility where she had been receiving care since the October incident. The Bangsar Park Residents’ Association president, Mr Nitesh Malani, confirmed her death to local media.
The grandmother had been attacked during an early morning walk to shops along Jalan Limau Manis on 7 October, when a motorcyclist violently grabbed her handbag, causing her to suffer severe injuries in the process.
Following her death, authorities are now reviewing the charges against the alleged perpetrator, whose identity remains protected under court order. The suspect was initially charged with causing hurt during a robbery under Section 394 of the Penal Code, an offence that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, along with possible fines and whipping.
The case has sent shockwaves through the affluent Bangsar community, highlighting growing concerns about street crime targeting vulnerable residents. The accused is scheduled to stand trial on 10 January 2025.
