29-12-2024 (SINGAPORE) A motorcyclist lost his life in a devastating incident on the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) when a massive concrete block allegedly dislodged from a heavy goods vehicle, leading to the arrest of the lorry driver on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 11:30 on Saturday (28 DEC) morning near Pandan Garden. Eyewitness Ms. Hu (in her 40s), who came upon the scene shortly after the incident, described the harrowing sight. “There was an enormous concrete block with exposed reinforcement bars strewn across the carriageway.” “Next to it lay a severely damaged motorcycle, with debris scattered across multiple lanes. The heavy goods vehicle had stopped several metres ahead.” she said.
Ms. Hu noted that a second concrete block remained secured on the lorry’s trailer, suggesting that its companion had broken free during transit. The motorcycle showed extensive damage, with its storage compartment and various components scattered across the tarmac.
Emergency services swiftly cordoned off the area, with police establishing a protective screen around the scene. Officers were observed interviewing the lorry driver while accident investigators documented the scene.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the motorcyclist, a 58-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The 46-year-old lorry driver was subsequently taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
