27-12-2024 (SEOUL) The National Assembly has voted overwhelmingly to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo, further destabilising the nation’s already fragile political landscape.
The parliamentary vote, which saw 192 lawmakers out of the 300-member assembly backing the impeachment motion, comes amid mounting tensions following the controversial period of martial law under former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s administration.
At the heart of the impeachment lies Han’s steadfast refusal to appoint three vacant positions in the Constitutional Court, where his predecessor, Yoon, currently faces trial. The opposition argues that this deliberate delay has effectively paralysed the proper functioning of South Korea’s highest constitutional body.
Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is now poised to assume the role of acting president, marking yet another dramatic shift in the nation’s leadership within a remarkably short period. This transition represents the third change in executive leadership that South Korea has witnessed in recent months.
