25-12-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) The Malaysian Army’s 2nd Infantry Division successfully intercepted two Indian nationals during an attempted illegal border crossing via Sungai Golok into Thailand, military officials reported on Tuesday.
The operation, conducted by the 8th Infantry Brigade patrol team on Sunday evening, resulted in the arrest of two men whilst a third suspect, believed to be their trafficking agent, managed to evade capture by successfully crossing the river into Thai territory.
According to military sources, the incident unfolded at approximately 10:15 pm when patrol officers spotted three individuals lurking along the Malaysian bank of Sungai Golok. The two apprehended suspects were impeded in their escape attempt by their luggage and personal effects.
During questioning, the detained individuals disclosed their intention to return to India through Thailand. Both men were found to be in possession of valid Indian passports extending to 2028 and had legally entered Malaysia in 2022 on tourist visas.
The authorities seized several items from the suspects, including multiple mobile phones, assorted timepieces, and a combination of Indian and Malaysian currency totalling RM4,746. All confiscated items have been transferred to the Tanah Merah district police headquarters for further investigation.
