22-12-2024 (BANGKOK) A dramatic scene unfolded at a cockfighting venue in Thailand’s Nakhon Pathom Province yesterday when five armed men discharged their weapons into the air, sending spectators fleeing in panic. The incident, captured on CCTV footage, occurred at a well-known arena in Bang Len district.
The confrontation began around 4 pm when the group, who had reportedly lost substantial wagers, refused to honour their gambling debts. Surveillance footage showed the men approaching another party for what appeared to be a heated discussion before the situation escalated dramatically.
In a brazen display of intimidation, one man initially brandished a firearm, prompting bystanders to scatter. Moments later, his four companions also drew weapons, firing multiple shots skyward before departing the premises with apparent impunity.
“This behaviour completely undermines the integrity of the sport,” said a prominent figure in the local cockfighting community, who requested anonymity. “The old saying ‘If the chicken loses, the person doesn’t lose’ has no place in proper gambling circles. These individuals are nothing more than thugs tarnishing our tradition.”
The incident has sparked fierce debate within Thailand’s cockfighting community, with many veterans condemning the actions as a violation of long-standing sporting principles. Several enthusiasts took to social media, emphasising that participants must honour their debts, win or lose.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, which has raised concerns about security measures at gambling venues. The footage, initially shared by the Kbp Kaichonaddict social media page, has since gone viral, drawing widespread criticism of the perpetrators’ conduct.
No injuries were reported during the incident, though witnesses described scenes of chaos as spectators sought cover from potential stray bullets.
