17-12-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) A controversy has erupted in Malaysia after Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan was allegedly caught flouting the country’s recently implemented smoking regulations, sparking public outrage and calls for accountability.
The incident, which came to light through social media platform X on 15 December, shows the minister purportedly smoking at an eatery in Pekan Rantau, Negeri Sembilan, in direct contravention of the Public Health Smoking Product Control Act 2024 (Act 852) that came into effect in October.
The legislation, which significantly expanded no-smoking zones across the country, explicitly prohibits smoking in eateries. The social media post, shared by user @MsianInciter, depicted the Foreign Minister with what appeared to be a cigarette in hand whilst socialising with several individuals.
Notably, a separate photograph posted on the minister’s official Facebook account showed him at the same location, though without the controversial cigarette in view.
The alleged transgression has prompted significant public backlash, with many Malaysians expressing dismay over what they perceive as a senior government official’s disregard for the law. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad responded to the controversy on X, emphasising that “no one is above the law.”
The incident has highlighted ongoing challenges in enforcing Malaysia’s smoking regulations, particularly among public figures. The Health Ministry has yet to announce whether any formal action will be taken against the Foreign Minister regarding the alleged violation.
The Public Health Smoking Product Control Act 2024 represents a significant step in Malaysia’s efforts to combat smoking-related health issues and protect public spaces from second-hand smoke. This incident has reignited debate about enforcement consistency and accountability among government officials.
As of press time, Minister Hasan has not publicly addressed the allegations.
