17-12-2024 (SINGAPORE) In a tragic sequence of events spanning December 16 and 17, Singapore’s roads witnessed three separate motorcycle accidents, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries, highlighting ongoing concerns about motorcycle safety in the city-state.
The most severe incident occurred on Saturday evening when a fatal collision between a motorcycle and a lorry took place on the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE). The 37-year-old motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. The incident, which occurred near the Kranji Expressway exit around 8pm, is currently under investigation, with the 25-year-old lorry driver providing assistance to authorities.
Earlier that same day, at approximately 4:15pm, a collision involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian unfolded at the intersection of Nicoll Highway and Bras Basah Road. The 39-year-old motorcyclist and his 41-year-old pillion passenger were transported to Raffles Hospital whilst conscious. A 41-year-old male pedestrian sustained minor injuries but declined hospital treatment.
The third incident occurred early Sunday morning near the Woodlands Checkpoint, involving a car and two motorcycles. Emergency services responded to the scene at around 7am, where a 31-year-old motorcyclist and his 29-year-old female passenger were conveyed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. A second motorcyclist, also 31, sustained minor injuries but opted against hospitalisation. The 45-year-old motorist involved is currently assisting police with their enquiries.
These incidents come amid concerning statistics regarding motorcycle safety in Singapore. Police data reveals that motorcycle-related fatalities accounted for half of all road traffic deaths in 2023, with 68 motorcyclists and pillion riders losing their lives. Perhaps more alarming is the fact that 4,290 motorcycle and pillion riders sustained injuries throughout the year, averaging nearly 12 casualties per day.
