17-12-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Thai authorities have apprehended two nationals following a shooting incident near a Malaysian security post in Padang Besar, Perlis, Royal Malaysia Police officials confirmed yesterday.
The suspects, aged 21 and 28, were captured in Thailand’s Songkhla province last Friday after allegedly discharging multiple rounds toward the Malaysian border checkpoint. The incident, which occurred on 12 December, prompted immediate attention from security forces on both sides of the border.
Malaysian Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain revealed that the alarming episode unfolded at approximately 10:28 am when General Operations Force personnel, conducting routine patrols as part of Ops Taring Wawasan Kedah and Perlis, heard gunfire emanating from Thai territory near the border security barrier.
“Our officers displayed commendable presence of mind by taking defensive positions upon hearing the shots,” Husain said. “They observed two individuals on a motorcycle on Thai soil, though fortunately, no injuries were sustained during the incident.”
Surveillance footage from the checkpoint’s CCTV system captured the perpetrators arriving on a grey Thai-registered scooter. The video evidence shows one suspect brandishing an automatic pistol and firing approximately ten rounds toward the Malaysian border before methodically collecting the spent cartridges.

Through effective bilateral cooperation, Thai police managed to track down and arrest both suspects within 24 hours, conducting raids at separate locations in Songkhla at 10:40 am Malaysian time the following day.
During questioning, the suspects revealed they had borrowed the firearm from an acquaintance and claimed they were merely testing the weapon before returning it. Thai authorities are now pursuing this third individual, who allegedly owns the firearm.
The incident has gained significant public attention after a 73-second video of the shooting circulated widely across social media platforms, showing the suspects’ brazen actions at the international boundary.
Husain emphasised that the Royal Malaysia Police remains committed to strengthening border security measures and ensuring the safety of personnel stationed along the frontier. “We are continuously upgrading our security protocols to effectively counter any potential threats to our borders,” he stated.
