15-12-2024 (SYDNEY) New South Wales Police are investigating potential third-party involvement in the death of a 33-year-old woman whose remains were discovered in bushland near Sydney Airport.
The deceased, formally identified as Zhuojun “Sally” Li, was found by a member of the public in Sir Joseph Banks Park, Botany, during the early hours of Monday. The grim discovery has sparked an extensive police investigation, with authorities launching Strike Force Zygon to delve into what they are treating as a homicide case.
Of particular concern to investigators is the whereabouts of Ms Li’s husband, Jai-Bao “Rex” Chen, also 33. The Greenacre couple had not been seen since late November, raising alarm bells when Ms Li’s mother reported her daughter missing following unsuccessful attempts to contact her.
Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty, heading the Homicide Squad, revealed at Saturday’s press briefing that investigators are pursuing multiple angles, including the possibility of third-party involvement. “We must maintain an open mind regarding the potential involvement of another party, not only in Sally’s suspected murder but also in Rex’s disappearance,” Superintendent Doherty stated.
A crucial piece of evidence has emerged in the form of CCTV footage showing a silver Toyota Avensis stopping along Foreshore Road’s northern side in Botany during the pre-dawn hours of 30 November. Police have seized the vehicle for forensic examination.
Mr Chen, described as being of Asian appearance, slim build, and standing between 165-170cm tall with black hair and brown eyes, remains unaccounted for. While authorities have confirmed he has not left Australia, his current status—whether alive or deceased—remains unknown.
The investigation has expanded beyond Sydney’s borders, with detectives liaising with interstate authorities and Commonwealth agencies. Both families—Ms Li’s in Australia and Mr Chen’s in Taiwan—have been in contact with investigators.
Superintendent Doherty noted that Ms Li’s body was discovered “merely metres from the roadside,” suggesting the perpetrator may have hastily disposed of her remains. Police are urging anyone with information about the Toyota Avensis or its driver to come forward as Strike Force Zygon continues its investigation into this perplexing case.
