27-11-2024 (JAKARTA) One of Jakarta’s premier shopping destinations, Grand Indonesia Mall, experienced a major smoke incident today, triggering an immediate response from emergency services and the evacuation of shoppers and staff.
The incident, which began shortly before 13:00 local time, originated from a restaurant on the mall’s 3A floor, according to the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat). Thick smoke was reported billowing through sections of the shopping complex, activating the building’s fire alarm system.
Head of Gulkarmat, Satriadi Gunawan, confirmed that emergency services mounted a substantial response to the incident. “We deployed 13 fire engines and 52 personnel to the scene,” Gunawan told reporters. “Our primary focus was on smoke containment and evacuation procedures.”
Eyewitnesses described scenes of shoppers gathering in mall corridors as the emergency unfolded. Mobile phone footage captured by mall visitors showed the fire alarm system in full operation as emergency protocols were initiated.
By early afternoon, Gunawan confirmed that the situation was under control, though firefighters remained on site to complete smoke extraction operations. “The immediate threat has been contained, and we are now focusing on clearing the remaining smoke from the premises,” he said.
