8-11-2024 (WASHINGTON) President-elect Donald Trump has appointed veteran political strategist Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff, marking the first time a woman will hold this pivotal position in American history.
The 67-year-old campaign manager, who helped orchestrate Trump’s successful 2024 election victory, was announced as the president-elect’s choice on Thursday from his Mar-a-Lago estate. The appointment represents Trump’s first major staffing decision as he prepares to return to the White House in January.
“Her toughness, intelligence, and innovative approach have earned universal respect,” Trump stated in his announcement, praising Wiles’ capabilities for the role that involves managing White House operations and serving as the president’s primary gatekeeper.
Nicknamed the “ice maiden” for her behind-the-scenes efficiency, Wiles brings considerable political experience to the position, including work on Ronald Reagan’s 1980 campaign and successful management of various Republican campaigns, including Ron DeSantis’ 2018 gubernatorial victory in Florida.
The appointment comes as Trump begins assembling his new administration, with several familiar faces from his previous term reportedly under consideration for key positions. Sources close to the transition team indicate that Elise Stefanik is being considered for UN Ambassador, while Richard Grenell and Senator Bill Hagerty are potential candidates for Secretary of State.
Wiles’ selection over other contenders, including former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, suggests a preference for operational stability following Trump’s previous term, which saw an unprecedented turnover of four chiefs of staff.
David Johnson, a Republican consultant from Florida, praised the appointment: “Wiles brings proven leadership and a track record of delivering results, qualities essential for this crucial role.”
The president-elect has remained at his Florida residence since defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in Tuesday’s election, with further administration appointments expected in the coming weeks as he prepares for his January 20 inauguration.
