27-10-2024 (MELBOURNE) A Malaysian healthcare professional’s life was tragically cut short in what police are investigating as a homicide in Melbourne’s northeastern suburb of Bellfield. Leong Kum Chuan, 29, a respected pharmacist, was discovered lifeless in his Davidson Street residence on Wednesday.
The grim discovery was made by a concerned friend during the lunch hour, prompting an immediate response from local authorities. Following a swift investigation, which included analysis of surveillance footage and subsequent interviews, law enforcement apprehended Simon Hunter, 54, in connection with the incident.
At Thursday’s hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, Hunter faced murder charges. Court documents revealed the accused has a history of schizophrenia and was experiencing homelessness at the time of the alleged offence. Magistrate Tara Hartnett presided over the initial hearing, where it was disclosed that the victim’s family had just arrived from Malaysia and were liaising with investigating officers.
The accused will remain in custody until the next court appearance, scheduled for 16 January.
Leong, who had been serving at a public health services organisation since 2021, left an indelible mark on his colleagues and the healthcare community. Eastern Health’s Chief Executive, David Plunkett, paid tribute to the young pharmacist’s contributions.
“KC’s sudden departure leaves a void that will be deeply felt across our organisation,” Plunkett stated. “His leadership qualities, coupled with his commitment to mentoring the next generation of pharmacists, exemplified his dedication to the profession and the community at large.”
The Malaysian Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) confirmed they are extending diplomatic support to the bereaved family during this difficult period.
