21-10-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) An unexplained loud noise that reverberated across Ipoh on Monday morning has left local authorities scrambling for answers. Perak police chief Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the mysterious sound that startled residents across multiple districts.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 11:05 am, prompted a flurry of reports from concerned citizens in areas including Silibin, the city centre, Bercham, and Gunung Lang. Described by many as resembling an explosion, the sound’s origin remains elusive despite extensive inquiries by various government agencies.
In a press release issued on Monday evening, Comm Datuk Azizi detailed the steps taken to uncover the cause of the disturbance. “We’ve conducted a thorough investigation, consulting with multiple agencies, but have yet to pinpoint the source of the sound,” he stated.
The police chief confirmed that the General Operations Force in Ulu Kinta had been contacted and had verified that no explosive-related activities were taking place in their jurisdiction at the time of the incident. Similarly, the Perak Land and Mines Office reported no scheduled rock blasting events at local quarries prior to midday.
In an effort to explore all possibilities, authorities also reached out to the Meteorological Department. While no local seismic activity was recorded, the department did note an earthquake occurring in Halmahera, Indonesia, at approximately 11:24 am. However, given the time discrepancy and geographical distance, a direct connection seems unlikely.
The lack of a clear explanation has fueled speculation among Ipoh’s residents, prompting Comm Datuk Azizi to appeal for calm. “We also ask the public to stay composed and refrain from conjecture that could lead to undue distress,” he urged, emphasising the importance of avoiding unfounded rumours that might cause unnecessary panic.
