15-10-2024 (CHANGSHA) A heated altercation at a Haidilao restaurant in Changsha, Hunan province, has captured widespread attention on Chinese social media, with many drawing parallels to a famous scene from the classic Chinese novel “Water Margin”.
The incident, which unfolded in the popular hotpot chain, involved female celebrity Jiang Yan and a man claiming to be a renowned Hong Kong lawyer. What began as a verbal dispute quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, culminating in a scene reminiscent of literary folklore.
According to reports from Sing Tao Daily, the clash was allegedly sparked by the man hurling insults at Jiang. The situation deteriorated when he purportedly threw food in her direction, prompting a fierce response from the aggrieved celebrity.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating on Weibo depict a startling turn of events. In scenes that have since gone viral, Jiang is seen straddling the man, who lies prostrate on the restaurant floor. With one hand gripping his hair, she unleashes a barrage of punches to his head, seemingly oblivious to her own state of partial undress.

The violent outburst only ceased when bystanders intervened, forcibly separating the pair. While the use of violence has been widely condemned, many social media users couldn’t help but draw comparisons to the iconic scene from “Water Margin” where the character Wu Song grapples with a tiger.
Fight broke out in Chinese restaurant! I constantly keep reminding myself how imp it is to uphold my manners! Good manners are easily forgotten. It appears archaic in a setting such as modern #China, where civility toward strangers is a low-value commodity. @ShengXue_ca 1/3 pic.twitter.com/l1CaA9uAL0

In the aftermath of the incident, Jiang took to Weibo to denounce the man, accusing him of mocking people from Hunan province. She later posted videos on Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) expressing remorse for her actions while simultaneously urging netizens to refrain from sharing footage of the altercation.
The incident has sparked a broader discussion about public behaviour, celebrity conduct, and the power of social media in modern China. It also highlights the enduring influence of classical literature on the Chinese cultural psyche, with many finding humour in the unexpected parallel between a contemporary restaurant brawl and a centuries-old tale of heroism.
Local authorities have not yet commented on whether any legal action will be taken against either party involved in the altercation. Meanwhile, Haidilao, known for its attentive customer service and unique dining experience, faces potential reputational challenges as it becomes an unwitting backdrop to this viral incident.
