13-10-2024 (BANGKOK) In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded on Sunday morning, a newborn baby girl was discovered abandoned in a grassy area in Lom Sak district, Phetchabun province. The timely intervention of local rescue volunteers has ensured the infant’s safety, sparking a mixture of relief and concern within the community.
The Kok Sai Rescue Volunteers received an alert from a vigilant citizen at approximately 7 am, reporting the presence of an abandoned newborn near a used goods store in tambon Wat Pah. Responding swiftly to the call, the rescue team combed the area and made a startling discovery: a large plastic bag containing a baby girl, carefully wrapped in a towel and placed inside a plastic wash basin.
Smitanan Singsee, a member of the rescue team, recounted the emotional moment of finding the child. “I experienced a rush of conflicting emotions – shock at the situation, but immense relief upon realising she was alive and unharmed,” Singsee explained. The rescuer noted that the infant appeared well-cared for, with her body clean and the umbilical cord already severed.
The newborn was immediately transported to Lomsak Hospital, where medical professionals confirmed her stable condition. This prompt action potentially saved the child from exposure to the elements and other dangers associated with abandonment.
Following a tip-off, the rescue team visited the purported residence of the baby’s mother. Although the house was vacant upon their arrival, they uncovered troubling evidence: the discarded umbilical cord and traces of blood clots in a rubbish bin, corroborating the recent birth.
Officials from the Department of Children and Youth have taken charge of the investigation. They revealed that the mother, whose identity remains undisclosed, had been admitted to a local hospital.
