25-9-2024 (BANGKOK) A tranquil suburban neighbourhood in Pathum Thani, Thailand, was shaken by tragedy on Monday when a 67-year-old woman fell victim to a vicious attack by an American Pit Bull. The incident, which occurred near the village headman’s office in Chiang Rak Noi Subdistrict, has reignited debates about responsible pet ownership and the management of potentially dangerous breeds.
The victim, identified as Ms Daeng Thamthanta, was found with severe bite marks across her torso and a nearly severed right leg. Despite efforts to rush her to safety, Ms Thamthanta succumbed to her injuries before medical assistance could arrive.
Pol. Lt. Col. Kritsada Pratumkaew, leading the investigation, revealed that the attack took place in an alley roughly 600 metres from the victim’s residence. Evidence at the scene, including a bloodstained bicycle, suggested a sudden and brutal assault.
The dog’s owner, 48-year-old Ms Kiattikarn, expressed shock and remorse over the incident. She disclosed that the pit bull, named “Pokkai”, had only recently begun displaying aggressive behaviour. “It started to get fierce not long ago,” Ms Kiattikarn stated, revealing previous incidents where Pokkai had bitten other family members.
In a startling admission, Ms Kiattikarn confessed her inability to control the animal, pleading for authorities to intervene. “I would like the responsible agency to come and help take care of the little one because I can’t take care of him anymore,” she said, highlighting the challenges faced by owners of large, powerful breeds.
The tragedy has left the close-knit community, largely composed of extended family members, in mourning. Mr Thawee Makphong, the victim’s 41-year-old son, described the shock of discovering his mother’s fate. “When I ran to look, I was shocked because I saw a lot of blood,” he recounted.
