23-9-2024 (JERUSALEM) The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have unleashed their most ferocious aerial assault on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon in nearly a year. The Lebanese Health Ministry reports a staggering toll, with at least 275 lives lost and 1,024 individuals wounded in the wake of the intense bombardment.
The conflict took a dire turn early Monday when the IDF issued an urgent evacuation notice to residents in southern Lebanon, hinting at the presence of military arsenals in civilian areas. This ominous warning preceded a massive air campaign that saw Israeli jets striking over 300 targets across the region, marking an unprecedented intensification of military engagement between Israel and Hezbollah.
IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari characterised the operation as a “preemptive strike” aimed at diminishing Hezbollah’s military capabilities. In a significant strategic shift, the offensive expanded its reach beyond traditional conflict zones, targeting Hezbollah’s logistical bases up to 130 kilometres north of the border, penetrating Lebanon’s central provinces—a move unseen in recent military exchanges.
The far-reaching nature of the assault was underscored by reports from Lebanese media, indicating that residents received direct communications via phone calls and text messages. These alerts urged immediate evacuation from buildings suspected of weapons storage and advised maintaining a safe distance of at least 1,000 metres from known Hezbollah locations. Such precautionary measures highlight the grave intent behind the IDF’s latest operational tactics.
