12-9-2024 (BEIJING) In a forceful statement that underscores the escalating tensions in the South China Sea, a high-ranking Chinese military official has delivered a stark message to potential foreign adversaries. Lieutenant-General He Lei of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) declared that China would “crush” any incursion into what it considers its sovereign territory, including disputed areas of the South China Sea.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Xiangshan Forum, China’s premier defence diplomacy event, Lt Gen He addressed a select group of journalists, including representatives from AFP. His words were carefully chosen, balancing a desire for peace with an unmistakable warning to potential aggressors.
“We hope that the South China Sea will remain a sea of peace,” Lt Gen He stated, before swiftly pivoting to a more combative tone. He pointedly referred to the United States, suggesting that if Washington were to “move its pawns behind the scenes” or push other countries to the forefront of confrontation, the PLA’s patience would quickly wear thin.
The general’s remarks come amidst a backdrop of increasing maritime confrontations between Chinese vessels and ships from the Philippines in the contested waters. Beijing’s claim to nearly the entire South China Sea has been a source of international tension, particularly since a 2016 ruling by an international tribunal invalidated much of China’s assertion. Despite this, China has continued to bolster its presence in the region, constructing military installations on artificial islands and engaging in what many see as aggressive patrolling.
Lt Gen He’s comments also touched upon the broader US-China relationship, confirming the attendance of US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Michael Chase at the Xiangshan Forum. The general expressed hope that Chase would “listen more to the voices of China and the Chinese military” during his visit, suggesting a desire for improved understanding between the two military powers.
However, this olive branch was extended alongside a clear message of deterrence. “We in the Chinese People’s Liberation Army will resolutely crush any foreign hostile encroachment on China’s territorial, sovereign and maritime rights and interests with firm determination, staunch will, strong capability and effective means,” He asserted, leaving little room for ambiguity regarding China’s stance.
The Xiangshan Forum, often viewed as China’s answer to Singapore’s annual Shangri-La Dialogue, is set to host over 500 representatives from more than 90 countries and international organisations. With official speeches and roundtable discussions featuring military representatives from Russia, Pakistan, Singapore, Iran, and Germany scheduled for the coming days, the event promises to be a significant platform for defence diplomacy and strategic dialogue.
