11-9-2024 (SINGAPORE) Veteran actor Huang Yiliang, once a familiar face on Singaporean television, found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons on Wednesday morning as he appeared before the courts. The 63-year-old former artist is facing charges related to a harrowing traffic incident that left a cyclist seriously injured.
Huang was accompanied by his legal representative as he stood before the judge to hear the charges against him. The court proceedings centred on an alleged violation of the Highway Traffic Act, stemming from an incident that occurred on the evening of 20 September 2023.
According to the charge sheet presented in court, Huang is accused of driving a truck without due care and attention at approximately 8:22 pm. The incident unfolded at the junction where Cavenagh Road meets Bukit Timah Road, heading in the direction of Serangoon Road. As Huang’s vehicle exited the slip road from Cavenagh Road, it allegedly collided with a 27-year-old male cyclist who had the right of way, resulting in severe injuries to the rider.
The gravity of the situation was evident as the judge adjourned the case until 15 November, allowing time for Huang to enter a plea. In the interim, the former celebrity has been released on bail set at S$10,000.
This case has drawn significant attention, not only due to Huang’s past celebrity status but also because of the serious nature of the alleged offence. Under Singapore’s Highway Traffic Act, the consequences for such an infraction can be severe. If found guilty of reckless driving causing serious bodily harm, Huang could face a fine of up to S$5,000, imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both.
