7-9-2024 (HANOI) Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has issued an urgent call for ministries and government branches to mobilise resources for flood and storm prevention as Typhoon Yagi approaches Vietnam’s coast. The directive came during the regular August Government meeting held on the morning of 7 September.
In his opening address, the Prime Minister emphasised the complex nature of the developing storm situation. He revealed that Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has been tasked with establishing a forward command post in Hai Phong to oversee storm and flood prevention efforts.
“We need to forecast the situation accurately,” Prime Minister Chinh stressed. “Ministers, government members, and heads of government agencies must immediately deploy response work to Typhoon Yagi.” The Prime Minister’s concern stems from predictions of heavy rainfall in the storm’s wake, with potential accumulations of 300-400mm, which could lead to significant damage.
The Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Public Security were commended for their proactive approach in implementing specific storm prevention and control measures. The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of mobilising maximum forces in this critical endeavour.
In addition to addressing the immediate weather threat, the meeting also covered broader socio-economic issues. Prime Minister Chinh expressed confidence in the government’s ability to adapt and perform effectively, citing the recent addition of new Deputy Prime Ministers and ministers to the cabinet.
While acknowledging the complex global situation, the Prime Minister noted positive trends across various sectors compared to the same period last year. However, he cautioned against complacency, urging constant vigilance and readiness to respond to worst-case scenarios.
The Prime Minister advocated for a “no embellishment, no defamation” approach in assessing the country’s situation, aiming to build momentum and trust among the public, businesses, and investors. He called for objective evaluations of government policies and timely responses based on careful analysis of outcomes and lessons learned.
Emphasising decisive action, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of clear task allocation, responsibilities, and timelines. He called for strengthened inspection, supervision, and a focus on tangible results.
On the economic front, the Prime Minister highlighted the need for carefully calibrated policy solutions to promote growth. He noted the importance of monetary and fiscal policies, as well as the renewal of traditional growth drivers and the promotion of new ones.
Recent economic data presented at the meeting painted a mixed picture. The index of industrial production showed an 8.6% increase in the first eight months of the year, while foreign investment and state budget revenues also saw positive trends. However, the consumer price index has risen by 4.04% compared to the same period last year, presenting ongoing challenges for economic management.
