30-8-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) The sweltering Malaysian climate has proved a formidable challenge for Hong Kong’s beloved entertainers as they embark on the production of the highly anticipated Chinese New Year comedy, “Money Games”. Veterans Eric Tsang and Bobby Au-yeung have swapped the familiar streets of Hong Kong for the tropical landscapes of Malaysia, bringing with them a blend of star power and comedic prowess.
At a bustling press conference held in the heart of Kuala Lumpur on 27th August, Bobby Au-yeung, 64, regaled attendees with tales of his initial struggle against the unforgiving Southeast Asian heat. The actor recounted his first day on set at a local golf course, where the stark contrast in temperature caught him off guard.
“It was the oddest sensation,” Au-yeung mused. “There I was, under the blazing sun, and yet I felt a chill. My body hadn’t quite caught up with the climate shift, and I began to exhibit symptoms akin to heat stroke.”
The situation grew serious enough to prompt concern from Jack Lim, the Malaysian actor-DJ who serves as both producer and cast member for “Money Games”. Au-yeung reassured the audience, “Jack’s worried call actually roused me from my discomfort. I told him, ‘If I can answer the phone, I’m clearly on the mend!'”
Despite the initial setback, Au-yeung reported a swift acclimation to the tropical conditions in the days that followed. The veteran performer expressed his excitement at making his debut in a Chinese New Year film, particularly alongside his long-time idol, Eric Tsang.
“Working with Eric is nothing short of a dream realised,” Au-yeung enthused. “I’ve admired him for years, and now, sharing the screen with him, I feel poised for growth and learning.”
Tsang, 71, who wears multiple hats as actor, producer, and consultant for “Money Games”, spoke warmly of the production’s location. “Malaysia has long been a cherished friend to Hong Kong’s entertainment industry,” he reflected. “Post-pandemic, I knew this was where I wanted to create our next cinematic offering.”
The film, slated for a 2025 release, boasts an impressive ensemble including Grasshopper’s Edmond So and Malaysian talents Choo Hao Ren, Sandra Lim, and Wayne Thong. Tsang takes on the role of Big Boss Zeng, leading a team of undercover agents in their quest to dismantle online scam operations.
“Money Games” promises to be a rollercoaster of action and humour, following the team’s efforts to combat a scam network that has infiltrated Hong Kong. As greed threatens to tear the group apart, they must find common ground in their pursuit of justice and the greater good.
Tsang drew parallels between the film and his popular TVB variety show, Super Trio, noting the warm reception both have received in Malaysia. “There’s a special connection between Hong Kong entertainment and Malaysian audiences,” he observed. “We’re thrilled to strengthen that bond with ‘Money Games’.”
