21-8-2024 (SINGAPORE) A 34-year-old man, previously accused of making bomb threats against DBS Bank, now faces additional charges of verbally abusing bank employees. Ang Cheng Shin appeared in court on 21 August to address allegations of harassment and providing false information about a harmful situation.
The incident, which occurred on 27 May 2024, saw Ang allegedly make nine phone calls to DBS Bank between 1:30 pm and 3:45 pm from a location in Eunos Crescent. During these calls, he purportedly threatened to plant a bomb at the bank’s headquarters and verbally abused nine staff members using vulgar language.
Authorities swiftly responded to the threats, conducting thorough searches at both DBS Asia Hub in Changi Business Park Crescent and DBS Asia Central in Marina Boulevard. Police confirmed in an earlier statement that preliminary investigations found no suspicious items at either location, and Ang appeared to lack the means to carry out his threats.
Officers from Bedok Police Division managed to identify and apprehend Ang following a series of follow-up investigations. The accused is expected to enter a plea in October, potentially admitting to the offences.
The case has drawn attention to the serious consequences of making false threats and engaging in abusive behaviour towards service workers. Under Singaporean law, individuals convicted of providing false information about a harmful situation can face severe penalties, including up to seven years imprisonment and fines of up to S$50,000.
Additionally, those found guilty of harassment may be subject to a maximum of six months in jail and fines up to S$5,000.
