15-8-2024 (BANGKOK) A midday collision on the bustling Chao Phraya River has left four passengers injured and raised questions about river traffic safety in the heart of Bangkok. The incident, which occurred at 12:13 pm on Thursday, involved a Chao Phraya Express Boat shuttle and an empty chartered tour vessel.
The crash took place beneath the iconic Pinklao Bridge, a vital artery connecting the historic Phra Nakhon district with Bangkok Noi. Eyewitnesses reported a loud impact as the express boat, en route from Sathorn pier to Nonthaburi, collided with the tour boat that was reportedly attempting to enter the Bangkok Noi canal.
Among the injured were two Canadian men and two Thai women, all of whom were swiftly transported to the nearby Siriraj Hospital. Medical reports indicate that the male passengers suffered head and leg injuries, while the women sustained leg trauma. All four victims have reportedly complained of chest pain, prompting thorough medical evaluations.
Local authorities have moved quickly to address the incident. The Marine Department has taken decisive action by confiscating the licences of both vessel operators pending a full investigation. Additionally, both boats have been ordered to dock, clearing the waterway for scheduled rehearsals of the upcoming Royal Barge Procession, set to take place on October 27th.
