14-8-2024 (MANILA) In response to recent air harassment by China in the West Philippine Sea, Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. reiterated the Philippines’ dedication to enhancing its air defence capabilities. Speaking on Tuesday, Teodoro underscored the government’s ongoing efforts to acquire multi-role fighter jets as a critical component of this commitment.
Teodoro’s remarks were made during a welcoming ceremony for the Philippine Air Force (PAF) contingent that recently participated in the Pitch Black Exercise in Darwin, Australia. This marked a significant milestone for the Philippines, as it was the first time the country had joined the multinational exercise with both aircraft and personnel.
“This participation is a game-changer and a collective success for our government,” Teodoro stated, highlighting the importance of sustaining such operations. “The challenge now is to make these joint and combined exercises with like-minded partners a regular occurrence, year after year.”
The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Hae Kyong Yu, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr., and PAF Commanding General Lt. Gen. Stephen Parreño.
General Brawner emphasized that the experience gained from the Pitch Black Exercise would play a crucial role in advancing the AFP’s operational readiness and strategic defence initiatives. “Our participation in this multinational exercise demonstrates our commitment to enhancing our air combat capabilities and aligning with global standards,” Brawner said.
He added, “As we continue to modernize our forces, exercises like Pitch Black allow us to refine our tactics, improve interoperability with international forces, and strengthen our position as a key player in upholding peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.”
The Philippines’ renewed focus on air defence comes at a time of heightened tensions in the West Philippine Sea, underscoring the nation’s resolve to protect its sovereignty and maintain regional stability.
