7-8-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) A harrowing incident unfolded in a Bagan Ajam supermarket on Monday (4th Aug 2024) evening when a man attempted to hold his ex-girlfriend hostage at knifepoint, only to be overpowered by brave members of the public.
Assistant Commissioner Annuar, the North Seberang Perai District Police Chief, revealed details of the alarming event in a statement released today. According to the police report, filed by the victim at approximately 8:45 pm on the night of the incident, a local woman was accosted by her former partner in a terrifying confrontation that quickly escalated.
“The victim claimed she was attacked by the suspect with a knife, resulting in an injury to her right little finger during the ensuing struggle,” AC Annuar stated. The assault occurred around 8 pm on Monday, sending shockwaves through the usually quiet supermarket in Bagan Ajam.
In a display of community vigilance and courage, bystanders in the supermarket swiftly intervened. Their quick actions led to the suspect being subdued and detained until law enforcement arrived at the scene. This prompt response by civilians potentially prevented a more severe outcome and has been praised by local authorities.
AC Annuar confirmed that the police are treating the case with utmost seriousness. “We are investigating the incident under Section 324 of the Penal Code for causing hurt by weapon and Section 506 for criminal intimidation,” he said. The suspect was brought before the Butterworth Court on Wednesday for a remand hearing.
The police chief added that they are working closely with the Deputy Public Prosecutor to expedite charges against the suspect. “We aim to bring formal charges as soon as possible, pending further decisions from the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office,” AC Annuar explained.
