4-8-2024 (BANGKOK) The Thai Ministry of Defence has ordered the establishment of a committee to investigate alleged cases of assault against army privates by senior officers. This move comes after a concerning incident came to light involving privates from the 25th Cavalry Battalion of the 4th Cavalry Regiment, King’s Guard, stationed at the Adisorn Military Camp in Chiang Mai.
The alleged assault was brought to public attention when the younger sister of one of the victims took to social media, sharing her distressing account on the Sai Mai Tong Rod Facebook page. According to her statement, more than 10 privates were summoned in the middle of a rainy night by their superiors, a sergeant major first class and a corporal, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
The privates were allegedly ordered to stand naked in the pouring rain for approximately six hours, during which they endured physical abuse, including beatings, kicks, and stomping from their superiors.
Responding to the disturbing allegations, Defence Minister Sutin Klungsang unequivocally stated that the ministry condemns excessive and inappropriate punishment towards army privates. He emphasized that a committee will be formed to investigate the latest case thoroughly, ensuring fairness and transparency in the process.
“The ministry will also form a committee to investigate the latest case to ensure fairness and prevent public doubt,” Sutin stated.
Furthermore, the Defence Minister revealed his intention to meet with Army Chief Gen Charoenchai Hinthao on Monday to address broader issues within the army and seek solutions. He has urged the army chief to hold a commander-level meeting nationwide to ensure that ministry policies are adhered to across all ranks.
Sutin also informed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin about the matter, underscoring the gravity of the situation. “From now on, if there are cases of mistreatment or excessive punishment of privates, there will be a central investigation committee to ensure transparency,” he assured.
