28-7-2024 (SINGAPORE) A dramatic police pursuit through the streets of Toa Payoh culminated in a spectacular crash and the arrest of two men on suspicion of drug-related offences and weapons possession. The incident, which unfolded on 27 July, has shed light on ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the city-state.
According to police reports, the chain of events began when authorities received a call for assistance at Block 177 Toa Payoh Central at approximately 2:05 pm. Upon arrival, officers encountered a vehicle that hastily fled the scene, triggering an immediate pursuit.
The chase reached its climax at the junction of Lorong 3 and Lorong 4 Toa Payoh, where the suspects’ car lost control and collided with a traffic light pole. Eyewitness footage, which has since gone viral on social media with over 34,000 views, captured the intense moments of the pursuit and the subsequent crash.
In the aftermath of the collision, the 27-year-old driver attempted to evade capture on foot but was swiftly apprehended by pursuing officers. His 25-year-old passenger was also detained at the scene. Both men were later transported to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, reportedly in a conscious state.
A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a cache of incriminating items, including a knuckleduster, a knife, substances believed to be controlled drugs, and various drug paraphernalia. These discoveries have led to a litany of charges against the two men.
The driver faces allegations of drug trafficking, consumption, and possession, as well as possession of scheduled weapons and a forged driving licence. Additional charges include driving without a valid licence, lack of insurance, and careless driving. Meanwhile, the passenger has been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking, consumption, and possession, along with possession of an offensive weapon.
This incident has prompted involvement from the Central Narcotics Bureau, which is now handling the drug-related aspects of the case.
