27-7-2024 (PARIS) Brazilian football icon Zico has become the latest high-profile victim of theft in the French capital, just as the city gears up for the 2024 Olympic Games. The incident, which occurred on Friday, saw the former midfielder lose a bag containing valuables estimated at a staggering 500,000 euros (S$729,750) after inadvertently leaving his car window open.
The 71-year-old Arthur Antunes Coimbra, widely known as Zico, had arrived in Paris to join the Brazilian Olympic team when the unfortunate event unfolded. Among the stolen items were cash, luxury watches, and diamond jewellery, although sources close to the three-time World Cup player suggest the reported value might be overstated.
Zico, who enjoyed a stellar career with Flamengo and represented Brazil in three World Cups, promptly reported the theft to French authorities. The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a joyous occasion, as the former playmaker prepared to lend his expertise to Brazil’s Olympic squad.
This theft comes at a time when Paris is in the global spotlight, with the Olympic flame making its ceremonial journey through the city. The torch relay, dubbed the “Epilogue”, has reached its 68th stage since arriving from Marseille on 8th May, drawing crowds from across the metropolitan area and beyond.
The relay has featured a diverse array of torch-bearers, from local youths to international celebrities. U.S. rapper Snoop Dogg and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon were among the notable figures who participated in the event, adding a touch of star power to the proceedings.
As the torch made its way under the iconic peripherique motorway and visited landmark locations such as the athletes’ village and the Stade de France, Parisians and tourists alike lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the Olympic symbol. The atmosphere of anticipation and excitement was palpable, with a 17-year-old schoolboy and renowned French rapper MC Solaar among those honored with carrying the flame.
