22-7-2024 (BANGKOK) A 27-year-old man has surrendered to authorities after fatally stabbing a Burmese national over a seemingly trivial incident on the streets of Bangkok. The senseless act of violence has left the city reeling and reignited concerns about the prevalence of impulsive crimes fueled by anger and intolerance.
The tragedy unfolded on July 21, 2014, when Lat Phrao Police Station received a report of a stabbing incident near the Happyland Center in Khlong Chan Subdistrict, Bang Kapi District. Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of 34-year-old Mr. Khun Shin Mon, a Burmese painter, with a fatal stab wound to his neck and another to his left chest.
CCTV footage from the scene revealed chilling details about the perpetrator, described as a man aged between 30 and 40 years old, dressed in a gray-black long-sleeved shirt and dark trousers. The footage captured the assailant using a pocket knife to stab the victim in the neck, prompting the deceased to give chase and attempt to retaliate. However, due to the severity of the wound and subsequent blood loss, Mr. Khun Shin Mon lost consciousness and tragically succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by rescue workers to provide first aid. The perpetrator fled the scene immediately after the attack.
According to the deceased’s friend, also from Myanmar, the two men were walking out of their room to meet a friend when the incident occurred. Unexpectedly, the perpetrator rode up on a motorcycle and parked nearby, accusing Mr. Khun Shin Mon of walking in front of his car, despite the fact that the two had never met or had any prior altercation. Expressing his displeasure, the assailant dismounted his motorcycle and rushed towards the victim, punching him without provocation. Despite the victim’s apology and the friend’s attempts to diffuse the situation, the perpetrator ignored their pleas, drew a knife, and stabbed Mr. Khun Shin Mon before hastily fleeing the scene on his motorcycle.
In a promising development, Pol. Col. Thanapan Phdungkan, Superintendent of Lat Phrao Police Station, confirmed on July 22, 2014, that the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Mr. Ek Isara, had contacted authorities and surrendered himself. The Lat Phrao Police Investigation Division promptly brought Mr. Ek Isara in for questioning in the investigation room, aiming to shed light on the motive behind this senseless crime.
