10-7-2024 (SINGAPORE) In a move to support its cleaner energy vision and climate change goals, Singapore will cease registering new diesel cars and taxis from 2025, announced the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Wednesday. The decision aligns with the city-state’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and transitioning towards a more sustainable transportation sector.
Under the new regulations, diesel car owners will be allowed to renew their certificate of entitlement (COE), a mandatory permit required for vehicle ownership in Singapore. However, they will face higher road taxes, serving as a deterrent to discourage renewals and incentivize a shift towards cleaner alternatives.
The LTA clarified that the restrictions will not apply to the import and registration of cars under the Classic Vehicle Scheme and Vintage Vehicle Scheme, allowing enthusiasts and collectors to continue preserving Singapore’s automotive heritage.
