28-6-2024 (JAKARTA)Â Indonesian authorities have arrested 103 foreign nationals, including Malaysians, in a raid conducted in Bali on Wednesday, suspected of involvement in cybercrime activities and visa violations.
The Indonesian immigration department revealed yesterday that the suspects, comprising 91 men and 12 women, were apprehended on suspicion of misusing their visas and residence permits, as reported by the Associated Press (AP).
During the operation, authorities seized a significant number of computers and mobile phones, fueling suspicions of potential cybercrime activities.
“They are suspected of not having documents and misusing immigration permits. The possibility of cybercrimes is being investigated based on the number of computers and mobile phones found at the scene,” Silmy Karim, the director-general of immigration, was quoted as saying.
The arrested individuals are currently being held at a detention center in Denpasar, the capital of Bali, while authorities investigate the extent of their involvement and potential ties to international syndicates.
Meanwhile, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported that Indonesian officials may face challenges in charging the detainees, as the alleged crimes appear to have occurred outside their jurisdiction.
“Their activities target individuals outside the country, making it very difficult to meet the elements of a criminal offence in such cases,” Indonesian immigration official Safar Godam told AFP.
However, Indonesian authorities are working closely with their counterparts, including those in Malaysia, to gather information and determine the appropriate course of action.
Godam further stated that the 103 foreign nationals, whose identities have not been disclosed, would be deported “in the near future” following the conclusion of the investigation.
The raid in Bali highlights the growing concern over cybercrime activities and the need for international cooperation in addressing such offenses that often transcend national borders.
