“The fishing boat capsized 6.8 nautical miles (12.5km) southwest of Tanjung Segenting. There were five men, aged 43 to 62, on the boat, and they were out at sea to fish when bad weather and strong currents hit the vessel, causing it to overturn,” Mohd Haniff said in a statement on Saturday (June 22).
The search and rescue operation was activated at 9 a.m. on Friday, and the MMEA team managed to locate one of the five victims, 43-year-old Tan Siak Bin. “The survivor was rescued by another fishing boat that was near the accident site. We have sent him to Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail here for medical treatment,” Mohd Haniff added.
Tragically, the remaining four fishermen have yet to be found, prompting the authorities to expand the search radius to cover a larger area. The search continues on June 22, with MMEA personnel and vessels scouring the waters in hopes of locating the missing individuals.
