1-6-2024 (BANGKOK) In a dramatic turn of events along the Myanmar border in Fang district of northern Chiang Mai province, soldiers engaged in a fierce exchange of gunfire with a notorious drug smuggling gang in the early hours of Saturday, ultimately seizing an astounding cache of 200,000 methamphetamine pills abandoned by the fleeing perpetrators.
The harrowing incident unfolded around 2:30 a.m. when a military patrol from the elite Chaiyanuparb special task force encountered the drug smugglers in the vicinity of tambon Monpin, prompting a brief yet intense gun battle. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, the soldiers emerged unscathed from the confrontation, while the smugglers swiftly retreated, abandoning their illicit cargo.
As dawn broke, drug suppression officers were promptly dispatched to the scene to conduct a comprehensive inspection. Their thorough search yielded a startling discovery – two modified rucksacks, each containing a staggering 100,000 methamphetamine pills, discarded by the fleeing smugglers in their desperate bid to evade capture.
Gen Narit Thavornvong, the commanding officer of Chiang Mai’s drug suppression unit, vowed to intensify patrols along the volatile border region in a concerted effort to stem the influx of illicit drugs being smuggled into the kingdom from Myanmar.
