29-5-2024 (TAIPEI) Taiwanese YouTuber and DJ Maze Lin, also known by her stage name Qiang Qiang, recently shared a memorable incident from her past during an appearance on the Taiwanese variety show “Queen.” The 33-year-old entertainer recounted an encounter with the Singaporean police, which occurred due to her choice of attire at a nightclub.
Maze, who rose to fame in 2007 after featuring on the popular show “Guess Guess Guess,” disclosed that about a decade ago, she owned a pair of extremely skimpy shorts. These shorts, described as “very low-cut at the top,” were part of her bold fashion choices at the time.
During her visit to Singapore, Maze wore these shorts to a nightclub, thinking they would complement her style. However, her fashion statement did not go unnoticed by the local authorities. She was approached by the police, who deemed her outfit “indecent.”
“They confiscated my shorts as evidence and sealed them away in a bag,” Maze explained on the show. She further added that she was informed she could not take the shorts back to Taiwan. Maze expressed a particular fondness for these denim shorts, which featured a gold chain and paired well with fishnet stockings. She noted that this style was “very popular at the time.”
Reflecting on the incident, Maze said, “That was the first time I was ever caught by the police.” Despite her efforts, she has not been able to find a similar pair of shorts since and has accepted that they are gone forever.
Singapore’s strict laws on public decency played a crucial role in this incident. According to the Singaporean penal code, a person is guilty of public nuisance if their actions cause common injury, danger, or annoyance to the public. The law on indecent exposure specifies that appearing nude in public or in private spaces visible to the public can result in fines up to $2,000, imprisonment for up to three months, or both.
It remains unclear if Maze faced any charges beyond the confiscation of her shorts. The incident, however, highlights the cultural and legal differences regarding public decency and fashion.
Maze Lin continues to be a prominent figure in Taiwanese entertainment, frequently appearing on variety shows and maintaining a strong presence in the media. Her career, which includes appearances on Blackie Chen’s show “Blackie’s Teenage Club,” showcases her versatility and enduring popularity in the industry.
