29-5-2024 (MANILA) In a move that underscores the deepening ties between the two Southeast Asian nations, the Philippines and Brunei have signed a landmark letter of intent, signifying their willingness to collaborate for the mutual advancement of their agriculture and food industries. The agreement was inked during the state visit of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to Brunei, marking a significant milestone in the countries’ bilateral relations.
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) released a statement highlighting the significance of the deal, stating, “It underscores the interest of both the Philippines and Brunei to explore further cooperation and collaboration on the field of agriculture for food security and sustainable agriculture between the two countries.”
While the PCO has yet to provide comprehensive details about the specific commitments and initiatives encompassed within the agreement, the Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) had previously indicated that discussions were underway regarding the potential export of Jasmine and sticky rice variants from the Philippines to the Sultanate of Brunei.
Moreover, the two nations have been exploring avenues for collaboration within the burgeoning Halal industry, a sector that holds immense potential for economic growth and cultural exchange.
The agriculture and food security pact was not the only agreement signed during President Marcos Jr.’s visit. The two countries also inked deals focused on enhancing cooperation in the realms of tourism and maritime affairs, further solidifying their partnership across various sectors.
During his bilateral meeting with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, President Marcos Jr. expressed his optimism about the agreements, stating, “The agreements signed between the Philippines and Brunei are certainly rich with potential and would be a very good start to once again re-energize the relationship between our two countries.”
The Filipino leader further emphasized the significance of expanding the existing partnerships, adding, “We hope to expand the partnerships that we have begun, and we feel that there is much potential that we can examine.”
This year marks a significant milestone for the two nations, as they celebrate the 40th anniversary of their bilateral relations. The signing of these agreements not only strengthens their economic ties but also serves as a testament to their commitment to fostering regional cooperation and collaboration.
