27-5-2024 (HANOI) In the picturesque valleys of Hoang Su Phi, Ha Giang Province, a Vietnamese couple has defied societal norms and found happiness in their union despite a significant 26-year age gap. Ah Sing, now 27, and his wife Kia, who is 53, live a life of simplicity and contentment, their bond an inspiration to those who believe love transcends boundaries.
The couple’s journey began when Ah Sing, hailing from an ethnic minority group, met Kia while working as a bricklayer in Hanoi. According to Ngoc Tinh, a friend of Ah Sing, he grew up in challenging circumstances, yet his honest and endearing personality won over the hearts of his fellow villagers.
“He has a simple and honest personality, he is loved by everyone in the village,” Ngoc Tinh shared. “But life has not been very lucky for him. He lost his father at a young age, and his mother left him and his younger brother alone when they were still young.”
Seeking a better life, Ah Sing ventured to Hanoi, where he crossed paths with Kia, a woman from his village who was 27 years his senior. Kia, with a maternal warmth, took care of Ah Sing as if he were family, and gradually, his affection for her blossomed into love.
“I gathered up the courage to ask her if she wanted to marry me,” Ah Sing recalled. Kia, initially hesitant due to her age, eventually agreed, touched by Ah Sing’s sincerity and his humble admission that he could not provide a dowry due to his family’s poverty.
Their decision to marry faced fierce opposition from those who believed the age gap would inevitably lead to an unhappy union and Ah Sing’s eventual abandonment of Kia. “People told me that if you’re old and poor, marrying a young man is just a sham,” Kia recounted. “People don’t believe in love.”
Undeterred by the naysayers, the couple remained resolute in their commitment, determined to overcome prejudices and prove their love was genuine.
Three years on, Ah Sing and Kia have not only officially registered their marriage but also welcomed a young son into their family. While their life in a modest home without electricity and with simple furnishings may seem modest, it is a household filled with warmth and contentment.
Kia embraces the role of a homemaker, while Ah Sing occasionally works with friends in the village to earn an income and provide for his family. Although their path is not an easy one, they find joy and fulfillment in their companionship.
