27-5-2024 (BEIJING) Myanmar has transferred custody of over 49,000 suspects involved in telecom and internet fraud to Chinese authorities since July 2023, according to the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) on Monday (May 27).
In a significant blow to several notorious criminal networks, the ministry announced the arrest of numerous key suspects linked to these fraud operations at a press conference.
Since the start of 2023, northern Myanmar has seen a high incidence of telecom and internet fraud cases involving Chinese nationals. These cases often led to further criminal activities, including illegal border crossings and detainment.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, the MPS launched an intensive crackdown on such crimes, achieving notable success.
Over the past five years, Chinese public security agencies have solved more than 1.94 million cases of telecom and internet fraud, the ministry reported.
A particularly encouraging development has been the steady decline in new fraud cases, with a reduction observed for eight consecutive months. This trend suggests that the rise in such crimes has been effectively curbed, according to the MPS.
