24-5-2024 (BANGKOK) In a resolute commitment to regional stability and democratic values, Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has declared that his administration is “working relentlessly” to bring an end to the crisis engulfing neighbouring Myanmar, where rebel groups have been engaged in intense clashes with the military-led government.
Addressing the esteemed Future of Asia Forum in Tokyo on Friday, Srettha emphasized Thailand’s active collaboration with Laos, the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and other member nations in addressing the Myanmar issue.
“We’re working together relentlessly for a peaceful, stable, and unified Myanmar,” Srettha asserted, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the urgency with which his government is approaching it. “We want to see Myanmar back on the path of democracy.”
Thailand’s heightened efforts stem from its shared border with Myanmar and the pressing need to address the influx of refugees fleeing the escalating conflicts. As violence has intensified in recent months, with the military-led government under Min Aung Hlaing struggling to contend with a multi-front conflict involving several armed ethnic groups, the humanitarian toll has been severe.
The clashes have also cast doubt on the junta’s pledge to hold elections, more than three years after it seized power in a coup that ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, further destabilizing the already fragile situation.
Recognizing the regional implications of the crisis, Thailand has taken a proactive stance, scaling up humanitarian assistance for Myanmar’s people along the Thai-Myanmar border, where conflicts have been raging. This humanitarian outreach underscores Thailand’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of those caught in the crossfire and addressing the dire consequences of the ongoing unrest.
Srettha’s remarks in Tokyo reflect not only Thailand’s unwavering commitment to resolving the Myanmar crisis but also its dedication to upholding the principles of democracy and regional stability. As a key player in Southeast Asia, Thailand’s leadership in this effort is pivotal, underscoring the importance of regional cooperation and diplomatic engagement in resolving conflicts and fostering an environment conducive to peace and prosperity.
