23-5-2024 (BANGKOK) In the early hours of 23rd May 2024, a devastating accident occurred in the Prawet district, claiming two lives and injuring one. The incident happened at approximately 1:30 AM, when a pickup truck lost control and crashed into a bridge support opposite Seacon Square on Srinakarin Road.
Police Lieutenant Kitichote Sumpmat of Prawet Police Station, along with forensic experts from the Police General Hospital and volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, arrived promptly at the scene.
The accident site, a four-lane road, revealed a severely damaged Toyota Vigo pickup truck with registration number 1กฌ7568 Bangkok. The vehicle had struck the bridge support with such force that it was torn in half, scattering debris across the road. Inside, rescuers found a 25-year-old man with multiple fractures and lacerations, seated in the front passenger seat. He was extricated using hydraulic cutting tools and rushed to Sainphat Chaloem Phrakiat Hospital for treatment.
Tragically, two men were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, approximately 27 years old, suffered a broken neck and limbs, while another male, around 45 years old, was found in a similar condition in the back seat. Their bodies were carefully removed from the wreckage for further examination.
An eyewitness, 19-year-old Mr. Pongsapak, recounted that the pickup truck had been speeding in the third lane. It attempted to overtake a slower vehicle and encountered a garbage truck moving at a slow pace, leading to a sudden brake. The wet and slippery road conditions, due to heavy rain, caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the vehicle slamming into the bridge support. A fire broke out in the engine compartment, but quick-thinking bystanders managed to extinguish it before it spread.
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity of the accident to gather more information. The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the Police General Hospital for detailed autopsies, and their families will be notified accordingly.
