25-4-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) The head of Malaysia’s Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has revealed that former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is among the individuals being investigated in connection with a graft probe involving his sons. The announcement was made by MACC’s chief commissioner, Azam Baki, during a press conference on Thursday (April 25).
The investigation gained momentum in January when the MACC served Mahathir’s businessmen sons, Mirzan and Mokhzani, with notices to declare their wealth. This move was part of a broader investigation into offshore financial and business records unveiled by a consortium of news organisations.
While Azam Baki declined to provide specific details on the ongoing investigations facing Mahathir or his sons, he emphasized the need to allow the process to conclude before making any definitive statements. “Let the investigations conclude first, until an appropriate time when we can state the findings of the case,” he told reporters during the televised remarks.
The MACC’s probe into the former prime minister and his sons comes amid a wave of high-profile corruption cases launched by the anti-graft agency in recent months. These investigations have targeted prominent political figures, including those perceived as allied with the 98-year-old Mahathir, who has long been a formidable foe of the current Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar, however, has dismissed allegations of targeting political rivals, asserting that the investigations are part of the government’s efforts to combat high-level corruption within the country. “The investigations are part of the government’s efforts to tackle high-level corruption,” he stated.
